About the Project
Live x Live is a global platform for livestream music and entertainment. They sought to create a new mobile application, Slacker, that would allow users to create their own radio stations, listen to existing ones, and explore content in a personalized feed. The project involved a complete overhaul of a previous version, starting from the ground up to deliver a superior user experience.
Main Objectives
Design a user-friendly and intuitive mobile application for creating and listening to radio stations. Develop a personalized “discover feed” to enhance content exploration. Enable users to record and upload audio content for later transmission, including both pre-recorded and live broadcasts. Create a seamless and engaging experience that encourages user interaction and content creation.
The Problem
Live x Live recognized that the existing radio application was not meeting the needs of its users. Key issues included: Lack of Personalization: The previous application lacked a personalized experience, making it difficult for users to discover new content tailored to their interests. Outdated Interface: The overall design and user interface felt outdated, hindering user engagement and satisfaction. Starting from Scratch: The application needed to be built from the ground up
The Solution
The design solution focused on creating a user-centric application with a strong emphasis on personalization, ease of use, and modern design principles. The key elements of the solution included: Intuitive Navigation: Implement clear and intuitive navigation patterns to allow users to easily create stations, browse content, and manage their preferences. Personalized Discover Feed: Develop a dynamic “discover feed” that recommends stations and content based on user preferences, listening history, and trending topics. Streamlined Content Creation: Design a user-friendly interface for recording and uploading audio content, with clear options for both pre-recorded and live transmissions. Modern User Interface: Create a visually appealing and modern user interface that aligns with the Live x Live brand and enhances the overall user experience. Information Architecture: As the app was being made from zero, one of the biggest challenges was to define a clear structure on how the information will be organized.
Personal Take Aways
This project was a unique opportunity to design an application from the ground up. It reinforced the importance of user-centered design and the impact that a well-designed application can have on user engagement and content creation. The project highlighted the value of close collaboration with the client and development team to ensure that the final product met both user needs and business objectives. Defining a solid information architecture was key for the success of the project.
the process
User Personas
Developed detailed user personas to represent the target audience and guide design decisions.
Personas Stories
User Flows
User flow example: Creating a Radio Station User opens the app and navigates to the “Create Station” section. User is presented with options to select music, talk, or a combination of both. User searches for specific artists, songs, or topics. User adds selected content to their station. User customizes station settings (name, description, artwork). User publishes the station and can share it with others.
Wireframing & UI Guidelines
Low-fidelity wireframes were created to define the layout and functionality of key screens, including the home screen, station creation flow, and discover feed. UI guidelines were established to ensure consistency in typography, color palette, iconography, and other visual elements.
User interface Design & Prototyping
High-fidelity mockups were created using Adobe XD, showcasing a clean, modern, and intuitive design. Interactive prototypes were developed to simulate user interactions and test the overall user experience.
User Testing
Objectives: Evaluate the usability of the core features of the Slacker app. Identify any pain points or areas of confusion in the user experience. Gather feedback on the intuitiveness of the navigation and content creation process. Assess the effectiveness of the personalized discover feed. Users found the station creation process generally intuitive, but some struggled with naming and categorizing their stations. The discover feed was well-received, but some users desired more filtering options to refine the recommendations. The audio recording and uploading feature was identified as a key pain point, with users finding the interface clunky and the instructions unclear. Sharing a station with friends was straightforward, but some users wanted more customization options for the sharing message
